APRIL NEWSLETTER
The month of March was definitely a very memorable and
special month for the Hurricanes. The Canes were invited
to participate in the 2008 NCAA Tournament and made it
to the Round of 32 before losing to #7 ranked Texas
75-72 to finish the season at 23-11. It’s amazing how
fast this season moved along. However, the 2007-2008
season is one that will be remembered as one of the best
seasons in the history of Miami’s basketball program.
March started with the Hurricanes beating the Virginia
Cavaliers 95-93. Jack McClinton scored 34 points in the
win. The victory gave the Hurricanes their 20th win of
the season and our seventh ACC win for the third time
since Miami joined the ACC. McClinton hit a career-high
seven 3-pointers, including five in the second half—to
lead the Canes to the win over the Cavaliers. After
defeating Virginia, Miami had to play Boston College in
the final home game of the season. Jack McClinton and
Lance Hurdle led the Hurricanes to a 74-61 victory over
Boston College. The win over BC was the sixth win in the
past seven games and improved Miami’s home record to
14-2, the best home record in school’s history.
McClinton scored 21 points and junior Lance Hurdle added
19 points and went 10-for10 from the free throw line to
clinch the win over the BC Eagles
After defeating Boston College, the Hurricanes had to
travel to Tallahassee, FL to play Florida State in the
final game of the 2007-2008 season. The Canes fell to
the Seminoles 75-72 in overtime to finish the season at
21-9 (8-8 in the ACC) in a game that featured 17 ties
and 13 lead changes. Jack McClinton led the Hurricanes
with 22 points and Brain Asbury added 12 points.
After falling to the Seminoles in the season finale, the
Canes traveled to Charlotte, NC to play in the
prestigious ACC Tournament. The Hurricanes entered the
tournament as the #5 seed and opened up against North
Carolina State. James Dews scored 14 points and Lance
Hurdle added 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists
to help Miami beat the Wolfpack 63-50 in the first round
of the ACC Tournament. Miami held N.C. State to just 34%
shooting from the field, including 2-for-15 from the 3
point line. The Hurricanes also out rebounded N.C. State
in the win to advance to the next round against Virginia
Tech. The game against the Hokies was a tight one for
the first 32 minutes, unfortunately Virginia Tech pulled
away down the stretch as the Hokies advanced to the
semi-final game against North Carolina.
The Hurricanes returned home after the ACC Tournament
anxious to find where they would be headed to in the
2008 NCAA Tournament. Selection Sunday was a very
special day, especially for our seniors. The Canes were
selected as a #7 seed in the South Region. Our first
round game was against the #10 seed St. Mary’s Gaels
from the West Coast Conference. The game would take
place in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Canes were only 1 of
4 ACC teams selected to play in the 2008 NCAA Tournament
(UNC, Duke, Clemson & Miami). The Canes, after trailing
at halftime 32-27, responded with a great second half
and finished with a 78-64 victory over St. Mary’s. Jack
McClinton scored 32 of his career high 38 points in the
second half. McClinton scored 10 straight points for
Miami early in the second half, part of a 25-5 run that
gave the Hurricanes a 52-38 lead. With the win over St.
Mary's, the Hurricanes moved on to a second-round match
up with the #2 seed Texas Longhorns.
The game against the #7 ranked Texas Longhorns was a
hard fought game for the Hurricanes. After trailing
by as much as 17 points, the Canes made a dramatic
rally before losing by a score of 75-72. Jack
McClinton scored 18 points while senior Raymond
Hicks finished his career with 10 points and 4
rebounds. Miami finished the season 23-11, the 2nd
most wins in the history of Miami’s basketball
program. The 2007-2008 season was definitely a
memorable season for our players, coaching staff,
family members and our fans. With the season now
over, we are looking forward to a great off-season
and with four starters returning our staff is
looking forward to the 2008-2009 season. Keep an eye
on the Hurricanes in the future! |
